Will a vaporizer help me from coughing? When using vaporizer is there strong smell produced?

I was in the hospital last week because my lung collapsed. I was told that smoking could be a big factor in this happening, but the doctor said it was spontaneous. I don't want this to happen again, but I also don't want to give this fun habit. If I was to start smoking with a vaporizer, will it help me from coughing and be less likely to cause my lung to collapse again. Now I use a paper, a pipe, and a water pipe, which would cause me to cough.
